On October 1st, Serica Initiative’s CEO Dinner series welcomed Ryan Haas. Ryan Hass is the director of the John L. Thornton China Center and holds the Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies at the Brookings Institution. He is also a senior fellow in the Center for East Asia Policy Studies at Brookings and a nonresident affiliated fellow at Yale Law School's Paul Tsai China Center. Before joining Brookings, Hass served as Director for China, Taiwan, and Mongolian Affairs at the National Security Council during the Obama administration. His research focuses on U.S. policy toward East Asia, particularly U.S.-China relations, U.S.-Taiwan relations, the Korean Peninsula, regional security, and maritime issues.
Hass discussed the evolving dynamics of U.S.-China relations, analyzing recent developments and their implications for regional and global stability. He provided insights into Taiwan's current political landscape, especially following the 2024 elections, and assessed how domestic and international factors influence cross-strait relations. Drawing from his recent publications, such as "Taiwan President Lai’s three big challenges in 2025" and "How will the Biden administration’s China policy be remembered?", Hass offered perspectives on the strategic challenges and opportunities facing the U.S. in East Asia.
